Okay, now that I’ve survived one of the longest months ever (keep that in mind if you’re considering a Masters degree while continuing to work full-time), it’s time to get back to what’s going on in the world of politics these days – plenty.
If you weren’t reading about the resignation of Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens on Friday, chances are you were paying attention to Congressman Bart Stupak’s (D-MI) announcement that he will not seek re-election this November. His announcement comes less than a month after he led a coalition of fellow pro-life Democrats in supporting Obama’s health care reform legislation after the President told them he would reinforce the federal ban on taxpayer-funded abortions with an executive order (which he can reverse if he chooses). That was enough to convince Stupak to cast the deciding vote in passing the legislation, but it didn’t shield him from the heavy criticism he has endured ever since.
Now, as Stupak steps down, Dan Benishek, a surgeon and Stupak’s Republican challenger, is stepping up his campaign’s efforts to take over Stupak’s Michigan seat in November. “He handed me a gift,” Benishek told Politico, “the phone hasn’t really stopped ringing” as donations totaling more than $125,000 flooded his account and put him on the path toward reaching his goal of $219,000 before the end of the first quarter filing period.
